Angel Sutton, 1977-2012

We have lost another CHS-TV "crew member." Angel Nekendra Mishaar Sutton, known to her family and friends as "Keechie," passed away on December 8, 2012, in Dallas. Angel was a member of CHS-TV during the 1993-94 school year, following her brother Onterio, who was enrolled from 1991-94. Their sister Uronica was in the program her senior year, 1987-88.
Angel was part of the state-level award-winning team shown in the group photo (wearing white, second row, fifth from left). She appeared in and worked on the video Check Yourself, scripted by her brother Onterio (top row, first on left), which involved students from every CHS-TV class as well as members of the faculty and administration. The video was awarded First Place in the state of Texas at the 1994 Texas Media Awards sponsored by the Texas Library Association. Additionally, it was awarded the much-coveted "Bob Bennett Best of Show Award," the first of two earned by CHS-TV in the 1990s.
I regret I learned the news too late to attend the funeral and offer my prayers to the family and friends of Angel "Keechie" Sutton. I remember her beautiful smile and laughter and her willingness to contribute to the efforts of CHS-TV during her junior year in high school. May God comfort the Sutton family and friends.

Mr. Earl Cariker, 1917-2012

Christian. Husband. Father. Farmer. Educator. Broadcaster. Administrator. Mentor. Friend. This was Mr. Earl Cariker. This will continue to be Mr. Earl Cariker in our hearts. He left us the morning of Wednesday, September 12, 2012, after spending 95 years with us.
Among his many accomplishments (including that of coaching several state champion debate teams for Carthage ISD), Mr. Cariker led the way in educational media in East Texas. There would have been no CHS-TV had there been no Mr. Cariker. He directed his own students in the mid-1950s in the live broadcasts of Carthage High School Presents on KGAS Radio, and was still hosting the CHS-TV version, Carthage Schools Present, until he retired from that post in 2001. Even after that, he returned for a handful of guest appearances, and joined us for Carthage Schools Present #1,000 in 2007 at age 90!
To read more about Mr. Cariker's connections with the history of CHS-TV, please go to the "CHS-TV History" link at right. You may also wish to view Carthage Schools Present #1,000 which is available here. It is presented in two parts.
Visitation was 4:00-6:00 p.m., Friday, September 14 at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home in Carthage, Texas. The funeral was 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 15 at First United Methodist Church in Carthage, Texas. An online obituary may be read by clicking here.
A brief tribute interview was broadcast Monday, September 24 as part of CHS-TV's biweekly program, The Carthage Connection on KGAS 104.3 FM and Carthage Cable Channel 21. This was produced by current CISD media director Stuart Stanley.
To me, he was a mentor. He will always be "Mr. Cariker." May God bless and comfort his family and many friends during this time of loss. As one former student (Kimberley Funderburk, CHS-TV class of 1988) said, "Heaven has yet another amazing angel."

New Teacher is a CHS-TV Graduate!
Mr. Dave Tracy, Carthage High School Video Technology and Broadcast Journalism instructor, resigned his position as of December 16, 2011. Mr. Tracy took over the classroom in 2008, and he and his students created a new student webcast for CHS-TV, Bulldawg Bytes. Additionally they won a number of regional and state-level awards. (For more information, please visit the link
CHS-TV History!)
I am personally grateful to Mr. Tracy for his diligent work during my last three semesters as CISD's Media Director. Mr. Tracy is continuing his graduate work as a full-time student at the University of Texas at Tyler. He will soon be teaching on the college level.
Best wishes to Mr. Tracy!
Replacing Mr. Tracy as the new instructor is, for the first time in the department's 31-year history, a CHS-TV graduate!
Mr. Daron McDaniel was hired to be the fourth instructor in the department's history, and was a vital member of the 1999-2002 "crews" I had the pleasure of teaching. Mr. McDaniel holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University and has been working in broadcasting since his high school days.
In 2010, Mr. McDaniel asked me to "introduce" his 5:15 evening newscasts and it's been fun hearing him daily.
